Xavier Matias-Guiu, Chair in Anatomic Pathology at UdL and Head of the Pathological Anatomy Service at Arnau de Vilanova Universtiy Hospital, received the Josep Trueta Award for Scientific Research granted by the Medical Sciences Academy of Catalonia and the Balearics. The event took place at 8 p.m. at the institution’s venue in Barcelona. This award distinguishes a researcher’s career in the area of health sciences during the last five years that has resulted in one or more international scientific publications. It is the first time that the Academy confers this award to a UdL member.

Matias-Guiu combines his teaching and hospital work with the scientific direction of the Lleida Biomedical Research Institute (IRB Lleida). The pronouncement of the Josep Trueta Award 2009 distinguishes Dr. Matias-Guiu’s career in the field of the Molecular Pathology in gynaecologic and endocrine cancer, making an emphasis in the quality of his research in endometrial cancer.

The Medical Sciences Academy was established in 1872 as a platform and meeting point for health professionals from Catalonia, the Balearic Islands, Valencia and Andorra. They aim at promoting the study of health sciences in all their facets (human, technical, social and civic), while taking into account welfare, educational and research aspects. Along the years, this goal has gradually adapted to the circumstances and needs of professionals and of society. Nonetheless, the Academy has sustained its independence and preserved its function as a scene for debate and as a link between different medical, pharmaceutical, biological and sanitary specialities.
