TERENA’s Eduroam initiative is a roaming service that enables researchers and students in Europe to establish a Wi-Fi connection on their visits to other institutions that are connected to Géant. The users at institutions that have signed up with Eduroam are thus able to access the Internet through the participating institutions’ wireless networks.
Providing a host institution belongs to Eduroam users will be able to connect to wireless networks in much they same way as at their home institutions: the username and password required to sign in will be the same as at their home institutions, although the method for accessing the network may vary from institution to institution.
As a member of Eduroam, the University of Lleida enables its own users and users from other institutions that belong to Eduroam to gain network access. CESCA (Supercomputing Centre of Catalonia), is responsible for managing the technical and administrative links between the participating institutions of the Eduroam Project.
WHAT IS THE UdL’s WIRELESS NETWORK SERVICE?
The UdL’s wireless network enables all groups in the university community to access the Internet without the need for a cable connection, thus enhancing user mobility. This network has been operating since 2006. Nowadays, the provided coverage guarantees service inside buildings and areas including them: gardens, cloisters, etc. The technology used was updated in September 2007 to ensure a more stable service.

The wireless network can be accessed in two ways: over eduroam or visitant.
- eduroam uses secure 802.1x password authentication and allows access to the UdL network according to the user profile (administrative staff, teaching and research staff, students). It can be accessed by all users from other universities that participate in the Eduroam initiative.
- visitant only grants access to the Internet to UdL visitors. This method of access provides secure authentication but data traffic is not encrypted.

By way of summary, for all systems supporting natively 802.1x (Linux, Mac, Android,...) is as follows:
- essid: eduroam (lowercase)
- security: 802.1x
- EAP method: TTLS (Tunneled TLS)
- inner Authentication: PAP
- access credentials: see next section
For other systems not supporting natively 802.1x such as Windows, you should install an extra software SecureW2 also available at Campus Virtual.
ACCESS CREDENTIALS
The credentials (username and password) for accessing the wireless network are the same as those used to access e-mail accounts and the rest of the UdL’s ICT services, in the case of Internet access.
In the case of 802.1x access, to log on to the University of Lleida’a wireless network, the credentials provided by the home institution must be validated, namely:
- Username + @domain (h1234567@udl.cat, for example)
- Password normally used at your home institution.
SERVICES PROVIDED
In the case of visitant access, once users have been validated, they can browse the Internet. This access is only for users non-members of Eduroam visiting the University of Lleida.
In the case of eduroam access (802.1x), once users have been validated, they will have access to all internal UdL resources assigned to them according to their university profile as if they were connected to the wired network.

Nowadays, the provided coverage guarantees service inside buildings and areas including them: gardens, cloisters, etc.
SUPPORT ADDRESS
The Eduroam support address is wifi@llistes.udl.cat. Only UdL users may send any technical or administrative queries related to Eduroam to this address. They may do so both when they are at the University of Lleida or at other host institutions that are members of Eduroam.
All other users must address their queries to the support service at their home institutions.
Students can ask by the classroom computer or desks library which will provide information for connecting to the wifi network.
FAQs
Who can use this service?
All members of the UdL university community: administrative staff, teaching and research staff and students can access to the wireless network as an eduroam user. So can the rest of visitors members of the Eduroam initiative.
However, essid visitant is only for visiting users not members of the Eduroam initiative.
Should I Access via the eduroam or visitor SSID?
If you are either a member of the UdL or the Eduroam initiative, you should use the essid eduroam. This will grant you access to all internal UdL resources (the library’s electronic journals, the UdL intranet, etc.).
If you are not a member of the UdL nor the Eduroam initiative, you should use the essid visitant. (Note: in order to use this access, you should ask the person who invited you to the UdL). This connection does not grant access to internal UdL resources since the data traffic is not encrypted.
Who do I contact if I have problems?
If you belong to the UdL community, you can send an e-mail from your UdL account to the following address: wifi@llistes.udl.cat.
If you don't belong to the UdL community but you are an Eduroam member, you must contact your home institution.
If you don't belong to the UdL community nor the Eduroam initiative, you must contact the person who invited you to the UdL.
